For word learning, I would like to share some experiences.
1. The most efficient way is "audio + picture".
For example, there are some materials called "Picture Dictionary".
In those dictionaries, words are grouped by Topics (like sports, activities, places, etc), not by letter order.
Each word has a correspondent Picture and Mp3 (including model sentences).
All the words in one group (Topic) are related to each other so that they are easier to remember together.
Note that the audio information (the word pronunciation and model sentences) is a VERY IMPORTANT part in our memory.
As I know, most Chinese people just learn the words and text by reading without listening.
We just choose topic, watch the picture, listen to the Mp3.
This way, we can build a large vocabulary in a short time.
Of course, the vocabulary built this way is only for reading and listening, not for speaking or writing yet.
For speaking or writing, we can consider following ways.
2. Graded text.
There are formal English lessons like those school text.
These formal materials are organized well according to grades.
Words are also introduced in by grades.
Just read the text and vocabulary, and listen to the corresponding Mp3.
We can learn the use of the words in the concrete context.
This method is not so efficient as the Picture Dictionary.
But the effect is more solid.
Also, this way has its own drawback.
It is not so interesting.
Anyway, the graded lessons are for learning, not for fun.
Maybe a little fun, but limited.
So we can turn to the 3rd option -- audio book.
3. Audio book
I like this way most.
By choosing my favorite novels, and by (sometimes ) listening to the Mp3, I can learn the words and sentences while enjoying the story.
PS:
For fun, some people favor movies or TV operas.
Due to my own experience, movies or TV operas are for fun, but not for learning.
The lines (in screen text) are wonderfully designed by famous writers.
The lines are very classic, smart and advanced.
The screen lines are more wonderful than the text in novels, since the screen lines have the time limitation and high requirement for dramatic effect.
If we want to learn to write those lines, they are a very good source.
But for ordinary English learner, those lines are too smart to use, and the information is too limited for general learning purpose.
